The Small Munsterlander:
A
German Setter with Water Wings.
A German
setter with water wings is the way a Gun Dog Magazine writer described the Small
Munsterlander as this breed of gun dog has evolved in North America. (see
Gun Dog Magazine August 2005). Though some Small Munsterlander owners might
not totally agree with this description, the idea behind it was to explain the
versatility of this breed in hunting upland gamebirds and waterfowl.
The Small
Munsterlander is a versatile gun dog with a strong prey drive. It
can retrieve ducks and geese all morning in cattail sloughs then
in the afternoon point, track, and fetch pheasants, grouse, or
quail, and do all this in all types of terrain and in all kinds
of weather. Then, at the end of the day, the typical Small
Munsterlander can return home to live in its owner's house as
a docile and friendly member of a human family.
This balance
between hunter and family member is what attracted my family to
Small Munsterlanders many years ago and what has kept us dedicated to these
dogs for nearly four decades. At
Wolfsburg Kennel, our goal has been to maintain the versatility
of the Small Munsterlander by preserving the breed's original attributes as
a versatile gun dog, as a superb hunter in the field, and as a great companion
at home.
